Ludlow is famously described by John Betjeman as “the loveliest town in England“, with over 500 listed buildings, mainly Georgian or half-timbered, Ludlow is a feast for the eyes.

The town has an abundance of rich history the pinnacles of the architecture here are the medieval Castle and St Laurence’s Church – the ‘cathedral of the Marches’.

Ludlow is overshadowed by its own majestic castle, as it was once, like York, a seat of Government in Tudor and Stuart England. Now hosting the famous food festivals and events throughout the year, there is always a lively atmosphere here. It has a reputation for fine foods, award-winning restaurants, speciality and antique shops and even a racecourse.

Ludlow is a beautiful market town with just 10,000 people situated in the heart of the Marches in the South of Shropshire located on the A49 Shrewsbury-Hereford road.

Ludlow town is best explored on foot. It’s compact centre is easy to stroll around and for those who enjoy a walk, the following circular route is a lovely way to see the town: from the castle, walk down the hill to the river below at Dinham Bridge (there is a nice cafe here ), cross the bridge then along the river bank to Ludford Bridge and return up Broad Street (through Broadgate) to the Buttercross.You will be truly spoiled for Ludlow’s beautiful walks both around the historical town and into surrounding hills, valleys and forests of the Marches. Ludlow also offers gentler walking opportunities into the surrounding countryside, and Whitcliffe Common, its stunning panoramic views overlooks the castle and town, essential for any visit to Ludlow.

Ludlow is an excellent base to explore the unrivalled countryside for picnicking and walking or nearby towns such as Bridgnorth and Bewdley (Severn Valley Railway), Ironbridge, Much Wenlock, Church Stretton, Tenbury Wells and Leominster. The cathedral city of Hereford with its chained library and Mappa Mundi are all within a short drive, as are historic houses such as Witley Court, Berrington Hall, Croft Castle, Stokesay Castle and Powis Castle on the Welsh borders. Acton Scott, an historic working farm and the Secret Hills Discovery Centre are all just a few of the nearby attractions, so you will never be short of something to see.
